Mozambique: What to Expect / Highlights

Benguerra Island

Benguerra Island is one of the largest islands in Mozambiques famed Bazaruto Archipelago and is known for its high dunes, inland lakes and beautiful beaches. Just off the coast, Two Mile Reef offers fantastic reef diving and snorkeling with beautiful staghorn corals and tropical fish from tiny clownfish to moray eels and harmless black-tipped reef sharks. While the island is known for being a marine paradise, on land it is an exotic and tropical paradise. There are mangroves, swamp forests, vegetated sand dunes, and evergreen forest savannahs. Visitors are delighted by the birdlife on the island, and a lucky few spot the resident freshwater crocodiles that wallow just below the surface of the beautiful lakes.

Gorongosa National Park

Gorongosa National Park represents one of the great conservation efforts in the worlds history. The area consists of a combination of unique geological features, limestone gorges and caves, which at one time supported some of the densest wildlife populations in all of Africa. Today, the area is home to charismatic carnivores, herbivores and over 500 bird species. A beautiful lake dominates the center of the park which teems with birds, hippos and crocodiles. The mission of the Gorongosa National Park Restoration Project is to train and revitalize an anti-poaching team and rebuild Park infrastructure. They are conducting biological monitoring and creating a permanent biological research station in the Park that will not only advance scientific understanding of the areas ecosystems but also provide education and employment for Mozambicans.

TIME TO GO:

The cool, dry months of May - October are most pleasant when daytime temperatures are generally around 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit and rain is unlikely.
