Gabon: What to Expect / Highlights

Rich Wildlife and Culture

Tropical forests little touched by humans; 13 newly created National Parks; up to 20 percent indigenous species; elephants on white sand beaches, breaching humpback whales, antelopes, buffaloes and elephants roaming the grasslands; trees filled with monkeys, baboons, toucans and African parrots

Gorillas

Although endangered in most other parts of Africa, they are abundant in Gabon's dense forests

Diverse Landscapes

Strange mangroves of the coast to the spectacular savannahs of the Bateke Plateaux

Few Tourists

Because Gabon has just recently opened up to tourism due to the newly created parks it is not yet on the "tourist radar map".

Time to go:

The best time to visit Gabon is during the dry season (May to September). The rest of the year is extremely hot and humid with heavy rain all day and night.

The biggest celebration of the year is the three-day Independence Day celebration in August (Independence Day is August 16), with festivities more evident in the towns and villages than in the capital.
