Day 1
JOHANNESBURG
Arrive Johannesburg this evening and transfer to your hotel.
Day 2
JOHANNESBURG / BLANTYRE
After breakfast fly to Blantyre, Malawi. Liwonde National Park is Malawi's best for wildlife. The park is located along the Shire River, a tributary of the Zambezi River. During your stay you are guaranteed to see hippos and crocodiles. You will also see plenty of elephant, impala, waterbuck, and baboons. Less common are sable, kudu and bushbuck, although bird life is plentiful. Leopards can be spotted at dusk and on night drives.
Days 3-5
LIWONDE NATIONAL PARK
Take early morning bush walks with a qualified guide who will introduce you to the small and often overlooked aspects of the African bush.
Breakfast is served on your daily morning boat trip. While game sightings can never be guaranteed, the best chance of seeing Liwonde's famous herds of elephant is definitely in the mid morning from the boats.
Visit Kafulafula School located four miles from the park's western boundary. The school has been supported by donations for several years allowing for a supply of uniforms and the construction of a classroom block and latrines.
All schools in rural Malawi are chronically under-funded and EXPLORE has identified this project as one where we can really make a positive difference. Guests are shown around the school and will also listen to the school choir.
Enjoy the afternoons at leisure before setting off for your evening game drives.
Days 6-8
LAKE MALAWI
From the west bank of the Shire River a boat will pick you up for a five-hour ride to your next lodge on Lake Malawi. Along the way you will pass through scenic fishing villages and thriving market towns.
During your stay on the shores of Lake Malawi, you will be introduced to the freshwater ecosystem of Lake Malawi and the bird life that it supports. Take a day trip to Cape Maclear by boat, then visit the Mua Mission which was the first catholic mission in Malawi founded in 1889 at Mponda Village near the present day town of Mangochi.
You may also visit the Ngoni Art Centre and the Chamare Museum which preserves local culture and traditions.
Days 9-11
NYIKA NATIONAL PARK
You are flown to the Nyika National Park which has incredible panoramic views across the rolling hills. Your lodge is built entirely of timber, logs and stone in a traditional log cabin style with some of the best views in Africa. The lodge consists of eight individual log cabins connected by wooden walkways and are beautifully landscaped on the hillside.
The high Nyika Plateau is where the rolling grasslands stretch as far as the eye can see and the lower slopes are hidden by extensive miombo woodlands. The wild, open nature of the plateau attracts visitors who come to view the birds and animals, study the flowers, walk or ride across the beautiful rolling hills.
Day 12
NYIKA NATIONAL PARK
Fly to Lilongwe for your international flight home.
