What to Expect/Highlights
  • Okavango Delta - A unique ecosystem of labyrinthine waterways that create thousands of verdant, palm-studded islands--often referred to as the "Earth's Last Eden".

  • Diverse Landscapes - A unique blend of magnificent landscapes from the searing mirages of the Kalahari desert to the lush waterways of the Okavango Delta to the savannahs and woodlands of Northern Botswana.

  • World's Largest Population of Elephant - Botswana's elephant population is currently estimated at around 130,000.

  • Incredible Wildlife - Hundreds of species of birds, crocodile and hippo, buffalo, lion, leopard, hyena, highly endangered wild dog, as well as many other rare species such as cheetah and aardwolf.

  • Kalahari Desert - Largest continuous area of sand in the world, occupying much of Southern Africa and spanning across seven countries: Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Angola, and Zaire. The Kalahari is classified as a "semi-desert" and covers over two-thirds of Botswana and contains a multitude of eco-systems subject to tremendous variation.

  • San (bushmen) of the Kalahari - One of the last of Africa's indigenous people who still live somewhat traditionally but are being forced to walk the fine line between Western and traditional culture

  • Untouched Wilderness - Because of money the diamond mining has brought to Botswana vast tracks of wilderness have been preserved. Today about 40% of the entire country falls under some form of conservation practice.

Time to go:
April through September is the ideal time to visit Botswana as the days are generally pleasant and the wildlife congregate around close by water sources. In general, June, early July and mid to late September are the least crowded times to visit. October-March has prolonged rains and some lodges close because roads are unpassable. Animals disperse when water is abundant so it is more difficult to locate them in the tall grasses but it is a wonderful time to see them with their young as many animals give birth during this period of abundant grazing in their beautifully green and lush surroundings.
