gamba Island, Uganda is a fascinating and easy daytrip from Entebbe. Located on the equator in Lake Victoria, the island houses a chimpanzee sanctuary where orphaned chimpanzees find a safe and natural home. The Ngamba Island Sanctuary also plays a vital role in educating communities and schools about the need to protect chimpanzees and the importance of conserving their fragile forest habitat. Ngamba Island provides an excellent forest habitat for other wildlife species including fruit bats, spiders, fish eagles, hippos (the only three in the area), otters, a crocodile and monitor lizards.
Currently, Ngamba Island is home to 39 orphaned chimpanzees. They come from various situations often rescued from poachers who have killed the parents for "bushmeat" and taken the infant chimps to sell in the illegal exotic pet trade. They all faced a life of mistreatment and loneliness but now live in a natural social environment that is protected by the Wildlife Conservation Trust of Uganda.
THE PERFECT MONTH TO VISIT NGAMBA ISLAND is February because it is generally cool and dry and it is also the best time to see the migration in neighboring Tanzania. Uganda is located on the Equator and can be very hot and humid from April to October, and sees frequent rains throughout the year. February is in the first of Uganda's two annual dry seasons giving the visitor a chance to experience Uganda without the torrential rains that sustain the incredible rainforests.
A GOOD VALUE is the Ngamba Island Tented Camp, which is the only accommodation available on the island. Individual tents standing on their own platforms at the waters edge provide for a unique overnight experience. After spending a day with the chimpanzees, it is a great place to relax and enjoy the sunset over the lake.
