Since growing up on an out-of-the way cattle ranch in Nevada, the president and founder of EXPLORE, Inc. has maintained a zest for the greatest adventures that life has to offer. After over fifteen years of providing reward-winning African travel experiences to her clients, Cherri continues to personally seek the ultimate in adventure travel.
"For six to nine months a year, I travel around Africa, looking for exciting new places for our clients to visit and making sure the old ones are still great. Tourism is the single most powerful force for conservation of land and preservation of indigenous culture, so traveling to Africa not only provides you with the best experience of your life, it helps people and wildlife at the same time."
In addition to the over 20 African countries and islands in the Indian Ocean where EXPLORE organizes exclusive custom tours, Cherri is expanding her company's repertoire to include other destinations that offer great wildlife and culture like Australia, Iceland, India, and Panama. Naturally, Cherri develops itineraries to all EXPLORE destinations with her own particularly refined taste for travel. "We prefer small, owner-run camps which have much more character and give you genuine personal attention," she says. "Our itineraries are truly 'custom'. We tailor each trip to our clients' interests and tastes... if a place is spectacular but no one goes there, like the Niger desert or remote Mozambique, we find a way to go."
As a graduate from UCLA in Anthropology, Cherri began her explorations of Africa while still in college. She founded what was then the only woman-owned, commercial film company in Los Angeles, and served on the boards of several not-for-profit African conservation organizations. As an active board member of the South African based Wilderness Leadership School which has sent over 100,000 people on African wilderness trails, she received the inspiration to create EXPLORE. She has been a strong advocate for conservation of wilderness and the advocacy of indigenous people. EXPLORE has helped build four schools in Africa and supports numerous conservation projects.
Cherri and her husband Richard have a home in Maun, Botswana, where they base much of their exploration of the continent. She is a member of the highly-regarded Explorer's Club, a meeting point and unifying force for explorers and scientists worldwide. Her passion for exploration was best exemplified in the expedition she organized and led in 2003, which was the first descent of Mozambique's 400-mile Lugenda River.
